The Basic video editing terms YOU SHOULD LEARN

When it comes to terms video editing have more than 30 terms to remember, but don’t let that scare you, you just need to work on them one by one, and at the end of the journey you will find you self with all those terms in mind, today we will show you the top 11 terms beginners MUST know.
  • Aspect Ratio

Aspect ratio means how your video’s width and height relate to each other; The dimensions are expressed through a ratio. Most common ones are: 4:3, 16:9, 1.85:1 Look at the image below for more example of this video editing term.

  • B-roll

When You are shooting a video of an interview or wedding film you want to have that flexibility to change into new view, the B-Roll can be inserted to make the transition easy on the eyes. Say you were shooting a footage of someone walking in the street and you wanted to shift into a new view of the subject, like the image below to make the transition look smooth and more cinematic

Get close up shots, the frame should be tight close to the subject. For example, the subject is a person the close up would be filled with the persons face.

  • Color Temperature

The temperature of the color is measured with kelvin and scale the ranges from cool to warm. To make it simple for you the cooler the color temperature the bluish the tint and the hotter the color temperature tends to appear red or orange.

  •  J-Cut

This one isn’t a shortcut for jump cut, J-cut is when editing a footage and we want to have the audio from the next shot precede the video. The name J-cut came actually from the shape a j-cut makes on the editing program’s timeline.
  •  Jump Cut

Again, this isn’t J-cut, confusing? We know. Once you try making them, you will understand the difference. Jump cuts make your production look amateur because they are abrupt changes between the sequential clips. In the production the subject jump cuts appears to jump across the screen from, one spot to another, the shots don’t fit together and make disruptive for the audience.
  •  L-Cut

Yes, Another cut). This one is easier to explain, remember the j-cut, this one works the opposite way, the audio from the first video continue to the second shot, also the name came from the same reason the shape that’s made in the Editing programs timeline.  
  •  Pans

Pans are the fixed horizontal movement made with your camera. Yup that’s it and the vertical movement called tilts and they are opposite from each other.

The name explain itself. there are 3 lights that are set up in the way to eliminate the majority of the shadows to balance the image and have appealing contract, its commonly called backlights or fill.
  •  resolution

Resolution refers to the actually number of horizontal and vertical pixels that your video contains. Examples for resolutions (SD)640X480, (HD)1280X720, (HDR)1920X1080. Most of the time resolution is referred only by the number of pixels that appears vertically So, examples would be listed as 480p, 720p, 1080p.

Wide angle lenses have short focal length with respect to body of the lens, these lenses get a wider shot of the subject more than the normal lens, please be aware if you are using a wide-angle lens when you are filming a subject, it may appear warped. Wide angle shot
