PowerDeWise Microphone is not working with my Windows PC/Laptop, what should I do?

If the microphone is not working with your Windows laptop/desktop, relax, take a deep breath, then please note the following points:

Connect the microphone to your PC using the TRRS to TRS adapter included in the package you received. The adapter was designed to help connect the mic to PCs, audio recorders, and some cameras.

If you don’t know what the TRRS to TRS adapter looks like, check the images attached below.

P.S: Ensure that the microphone jack is properly plugged into the female end of the TRRS to TRS adapter by pushing the jack in all the way till you hear a “click”. If there’s no proper contact between the mic and adapter, the combo will not work.

Please note that the microphone+adapter combo automatically replaces the default built-in microphone.

The reason for this is simple, the microphone is Plugged through the computer’s headphone jack and that is why it’s not appearing on the microphone list and instead just takes the place of the default microphone.

Therefore, it will still be listed as “Default Device” or whatever the name of the built-in microphone of the computer, which is usually just “Microphone”, like in the image below.

So, to know if the microphone is working, go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Recording

If you follow the steps correctly, you should see something like the image below.

Again, ensure that the microphone jack is properly plugged into the female end of the TRRS to TRS adapter by pushing the jack in all the way till you hear a “click” sound.

At this point, speak into the microphone, if the green bar moves, that means the microphone is working. If not, it could mean that the right audio drivers aren’t installed or need to be uninstalled and reinstalled. These links may help with that:

If that does not help either, your computer may require a USB Soundcard, especially if the “Microphone” driver isn’t listed under-recording (If you are not sure if the right driver is listed or not, send a screenshot to our customer support team).

Furthermore, some PC/Laptop models, especially Lenovo Laptops, have a TRRS headphone/microphone port, so you may need to try with and without the adapter.

In any case, drivers’ issues or not, the USB Soundcard is the easiest way to get a 3.5mm Jack External Microphone to work with your PC. Check the steps below on how to test if the microphone is working using your smartphone.

In some cases, the built-in speaker of your PC or Laptop may stop working once you get the microphone working with your device. If this becomes the problem check out our “Windows PC/Laptop built-in speaker stops working” article to find out how to solve the problem.

However, to ensure that the microphone itself is working, please try using the microphone with a smartphone (tell us the name of the smartphone in your response), following the steps below:

Please note that smartphones have a TRRS headphone jack, so you don’t need to use the TRRS to TRS adapter in this case.

  1. Ensure that the external microphone is properly plugged into the phone’s headphone jack.
  2. Open the voice recording app and press record.
  3. Walk away from your smartphone, let the distance be the full length of the cable of the microphone
  4. Speak into the microphone and tap 3 times.
  5. Walk back to your phone and stop the recording.
  6. Unplug to listen to the recording.
  7. If possible, send the recording to us (If it doesn’t work).

Some smartphones like the Google Pixel series require an app to work properly with an external microphone. Therefore, please download the Open Camera app by Mark Harman from Google Play Store, then follow the steps below

  1. Plug or connect the microphone to your device.
  2. Launch the App.
  3. Click the setting icon > Video Settings > Audio Source.
  4. Select “External mic (If Present).
  5. Return to the Open Camera app’s home page. At this point or to test if it’s working, tap the record button.
  6. While the app is recording, tap the microphone 3 times.
  7. Unplug the microphone from your phone before listening to the recording.
  8. After unplugging, playback the recording. If you can hear the tap, then it works.

After these steps, try recording using the Open Camera app. If you are not sure if you have the right app, here’s a link to the Open Camera app on Google Play Store:
